McMaster University needed WeUsThem to develop the first mobile application that would capture the perspectives of youth, parents/guardians, and healthcare providers. The challenge was to create a tool to evaluate clinical interactions, using Experience by Design philosophies, to improve the treatment cycle.
We developed the myEXP mobile application for Apple (iOS) and Android platforms, to enable youth, parents/guardians, and healthcare providers to be able to capture their perspective of clinical interventions. Through a series of questionnaires, youth can track their appointments, as well as refer to a variety of resources available within the application. Based on their thoughts and experiences, youth have the opportunity to document their feelings toward the treatment in a secure journal. We developed the application for healthcare providers and parents/guardians to also provide their perspectives after each clinical intervention. The information from the questionnaires is compiled, to evaluate and inform the clinical interventions moving forward. myEXP is currently being piloted with 200 participants, over a two-year research period. This experiential-based approach, coupled with outcome-based measures, will set the standard for how we capture the experiences of our youth, parents/guardians, and healthcare providers, ultimately resulting in the improvement of clinical treatment and patient health outcomes.
